Kind young man assists the elderly
- posted: 2003-06-19 17:12:38

In Spanish Town, a young man was seen assisting several elderly persons to cast their ballots at the Phillipo Baptist Church.

It is also reported that an indoor agent from that same town breached protocol by ripping up a voter’s ballot paper. It is unclear as to the reason for his action. Police were also said to be peeved with the ‘one-day’ policemen seconded to assist them. The police expressed dissatisfaction with the level of training that these persons received. The number of Citizens Action for Free and Fair Elections (CAFFE) members present was also reportedly low.

In Kingston and St. Andrew, there were reports of voting progressing very slowly and a low turnout. In the St. Andrew Western, there were a few instances where voters’ names turned up in polling divisions other than what they were told they were assigned to. Five voters were also turned away in the Seaview Gardens Division, as their names did not appear on the voters’ list. The voting was however described as peaceful.

In the East Kingston and Port Royal constituency, presiding officers reported that voting was slow but smooth. Up to mid-day, polling divisions recorded fewer than half of the voters turning up. The numbers are expected to increase quickly before the polls close at 5:00 p.m. In the Adastra Gardens Area, there were incidents of voter intimidation by supporters clad in orange shirts. There were, however, no reports of physical confrontation.
