Eastern Portland Roundup

Report by Gareth Davis, Gleaner Writer, Portland

Most polling stations in eastern Portland were opened at the scheduled 7:00 am for voters to begin casting their ballots. The polls islandwide closes this evening at 5:00 p.m.

Voting in most divisions, including Fellowship, Prospect, Fairy Hill and Port Antonio is proceeding slowly. But the slow pace is normal, and no cause for alarm, polling clerks told The Gleaner.

Throughout eastern Portland this morning there was a strong presence of security personnel which seemingly did much to defuse the fears of political intimidation that had been expressed by some electors in run-up to the local government elections.

It is widely expected that the pace of voting will be accelerated throughout the day.
