The Gleaner/Power 106 News centre has learnt that Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller could name the date of the local government polls this afternoon.

The prime Minister has called a press conference for 2 p.m. at Jamaica House.

The polls are due to be held by March 30 this year.

In the 2007 local Government polls, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) won nine of the councils and the People’s National Party (PNP) three, while a tie was declared in St. Ann.

Based on the results of the 2011 general election, the PNP appears to be the favourite to take the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation from the JLP.

The PNP won in 21 divisions in the national polls compared with the 18 won by the JLP.

PNP general secretary, peter Bunting, is predicting the PNP will win eight of the councils and the Jamaica Labour Party five.
