PNP selects new candidate for Ocho Rios division

The People’s National Party (PNP) has selected a new candidate on the eve of Nomination Day to contest the contentious Ocho Rios division in St Ann in the March 26 local government election.

Paul Stewart on Thursday resigned as the candidate for the division, paving the way for Dr Rohan Williams to be nominated as the party’s candidate tomorrow. The PNP’s Region One chairman, Lisa Hanna says Mr Stewart’s resignation has been forwarded to the party’s officer corps.

The contest for the division became controversial after supporters of Dr Williams protested against the candidacy of Mr Stewart. They said Dr Williams was a better choice for the party.

Stewarts’ resignation has also angered his supporters. Mr Stewart, who lost the December 29 general election to the Jamaica Labour Party’s Shahine Robinson in North East St Ann, was selected last month as the party’s candidate to contest the local government election.
