Electoral Commission: Less than 45 per cent voter turnout

The Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) is reporting that ballots were cast by less than half of the Election Day workers and members of the security forces, who are eligible to vote in the local government elections.


In a release, the ECJ said 15,601 special services electors turned out to vote yesterday, which represents a voter turnout rate of 44.9 per cent.

In total, 34,718 Election Day workers and members of the security forces were eligible to vote.

The ECJ said over in the Portmore Municipality there was a 40.9 per cent voter turnout.

It said 1,011 of the 2,469 eligible voters cast their ballots yesterday.

The Electoral Office said it is now focused on making final arrangements for the local government polls on Monday.
